By now I am sure you have heard about the new AIM 6.9 client that was announced by AOL this week.
Don’t let the minor version number fool you. These days, any version number higher than the previous one can signify an important update. AIM 6.9 is much improved over AIM 6.8, it is still FREE, and best of all, AOL has officially brought back the Running Man!
You can read more about this client on the AIM website and in some of my fellow teammate’s blog posts. There are also plenty of folks tweeting about it too.
I have been using this client throughout the betas and can confirm that all of my plugins work with AIM 6.9 as long as you update to their latest versions.
Try it today.
As a bonus tip, here is a quick way to switch your current buddy icon to the new Running Man (pictured above):
Enjoy.

I’m still kind of confused why AIM won’t automatically resize/crop a photo for use as a buddy icon. Are there any intentions to include this in a future build?
How about allowing larger icons/photos too?
robotrock, great point I will take it to the team.
I downloaded 6.9…. but I can’t seem to install it to any other drives other than my C drive. it doesnt even give me the option to where I want it installed to.
Hi Rob,
Adding more install location options would be a nice thing to offer. Can you tell me where and why you need to install this on another drive or folder?
Hi Rob,
I’m using Windows Vista and I just tried to download and install the new 6.9 version of AIM, but the program won’t start! It looks like it installed correctly, but whenever I try to start the program, nothing happens. I’ve tried uninstalling, reinstalling, and restarting but nothing seems to fix it. It also seems like a not uncommon problem for other vista users.
I tried downloading 6.9 but it keeps crashing on me after about 5 minutes. I’m using Windows Vista. Anyone else have this problem?
I ended up downloading the new beta version, which doesn’t crash, but I’d still prefer the normal version.
Hi Emily,
If you or anyone sees a crash in AIM and gets a crash dialog, I encourage you to enter your email address in the crash dialog so that it can easily be found in AOL’s internal crash system. Just drop me a note and I can take a look.
