AIM 6.0 Q&A Volume I

Q&AI was looking at some of the search terms used to reach my blog the other day. Most searches involve “plugins” in one way or another which I have covered in many posts. However, there are a bunch of them from people looking for answers on AIM. Today, I thought it would be interesting to answer some of the questions that may not have been answered specifically on my blog. Here are a few of them:

Q: What happened to AIM Triton?
A: The simple answer is that AIM Triton is now AIM 6.0. AIM 6.0 was built from AIM Triton. It is designed to be faster, easier to use, more stable, and has a number of new features like: Sending IMs to offline buddies, IM logging, hide IMs while away, etc. You can get AIM 6.0 here. Note: AIM 6.0 will import your settings from AIM 5.x at install time while AIM Triton does not. The future is with AIM 6.x.

Q: How do I create an AIM 6.0 or Triton launch shortcut?
A: I have updated my IM Control Panel software to let you re-create these at the push of a button. It also does a few more things. You can read more about this tool here and download it here.

Q: How can I change the AIM 6.0 install directory?
A: You cannot change this at this time. It is fixed at “C:\Program Files\AIM6”.

Q: How to import buddies on AIM 6.0?
A: I suggest you install the AIM Gadgets plug-in and use the “Buddy List Load” and “Buddy List Save” options from the “Actions” button in the Buddy List window.

I will answer more questions in future posts. E-mail me or add your own question in the comments and I will answer those as well.

Hey, there’s one problem. I’m trying to save my buddy list to add to my new screen name. I followed your directions, but there is no, buddy list load option in the action menu.

  4. Gus Says:

There are a couple of reasons you might not see the options immediately: A) you need to exit AIM 6 and restart it after installing the plug-in. It is always recommended that you exit AIM 6.0 before you install or uninstall a plug-in. Or, B) you need to enable the plug-in.

The solution to B is to go to your settings window (press F7 form any AIM window), click on the “Plugins” tab and make sure the “BuddyListOps” plug-in is enabled by checking the box to the left of its name.

Hello! I just downloaded AIM 6.0. It seemed fine at first, and then I noticed that none of my buddies had away messages up…and that is very uncommon to have everyone online and actually there! So I checked into it, and found out that a lot of people on my buddy list are online, but with away messages up, but they aren’t showing up on my buddy list. In the old version, it should have listed them as online, but with the little yellow notepad symbol next to their screen name. But now, anyone who is away doesn’t even show up! Any ideas?? Thanks!

I have just gotten a new computer and have downloaded the new version of AIM. How do I bring my away messages in? I know they were in the registry under “IAMGONE” with the old version, but now that has changed. I have tons of away messages, and really dont feel like typing them all over… HELP!

  12. mary Says:

i have done everything you said the box next to plugins is checked, so now how do i save my buddy list to make a new one?

  13. Zen Says:

6 is great, but I think it is terrible that you cannot change the install directory? What is the reason behind that? It would seem to me that a properly coded program should have the ability to change the install directory.

I would like to deploy this application virtually, but need the ability to change the install directory.

Any idea when this will be available? Or does anyone have a work-around?
